CanSkate
The CanSkate program focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Sport Canada’s long term athlete development (LTD) principles, CanSkate centers on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. Skaters will earn ribbons, badges and other incentives as they learn fundamental skating skills.
Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP certified professional coach. Trained program assistants assist Professional coaches during CanSkate sessions. Skater’s progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active, using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning.
STARSkate
Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition - this is what StarSkate is all about! STARSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating. Skaters begin practicing their Preliminary Skills, Dances and FreeSkate test requirements.
The session is taught in a group format as skaters work with a dedicated coach and will start to work towards independent practice. Skaters who are in the STARSkate program may begin to look for their own private coach to further their skating development. Even if you have selected a private coach, skaters will still participate in the Group StarSkate teachings, that way your child can get comfortable with the format of the STARSkate program.
Senior
Senior is the highest level of our Skate Canada STARSkate program. The sessions combine private lessons along with 10 minutes of stroking. When not in a group or private lesson, skaters are expected to practice independently and safely.
Tests are taken at the discretion of the skater's private coach. STAR 1-5 tests are coach assessed in a private lesson with your coach. STAR 6-Gold tests are assessed at a club test day by a Skate Canada evaluator. Additional test fees apply and are not included in program fees or lesson fees.
